At HB Homes & Commercial, building well means looking beyond the walls themselves. We believe every project should have a positive impact - caring for our people, our community, and our environment. From reducing waste and choosing responsible materials, to supporting local causes and keeping our supply chain close to home, we’re committed to building in a way that leaves things better than we found them.
Our Annual Planting Day
Giving back to our community and caring for the land are at the heart of what we do. Each year, our team comes together for our annual planting day, partnering with Hohepa Nursery to plant native trees and shrubs grown from locally sourced seeds. These days are more than just environmental work, they’re an opportunity to connect with the land, restore local waterways, and contribute to a greener, healthier Hawke’s Bay. By taking a hands-on approach, we actively offset carbon emissions, foster sustainability, and make a lasting positive impact on our community.
Leading Carbon Neutral
Here at HB Homes & Commercial, we’re on a mission to become one of New Zealand’s first carbon-neutral building companies. We are actively supporting the Government’s 2050 carbon-reduction goal. Rather than relying on purchased carbon credits, we’re committed to hands-on action by planting native trees and reducing our footprint wherever possible. Over the past years, we’ve undertaken a rigorous measurement process to understand our emissions in detail. This includes every tonne of carbon generated across our operations, as well as those from our subcontractors and suppliers, so we can make meaningful, lasting change.
Less Waste - Streamlined, Sustainable Construction
We believe building off-site in our purpose-built factory is the most sustainable construction method. It reduces downtime, transport needs, and resource use, while cutting energy consumption and emissions, meaning less impact on the immediate environment. Alongside this approach, we are committed to waste minimisation: in 2023, we halved the amount of construction waste sent to landfills by implementing robust recycling and waste separation practices. By combining innovative building methods with responsible waste management, we deliver high-quality homes and commercial spaces while protecting the environment around us.
Recycling Stations
We have dedicated recycling stations around our factory where all materials are carefully sorted and separated. At HB Homes & Commercial, we recycle plastics, glass and bottles, paper and cardboard, timber and wood offcuts, nails, screws and metal fixings, nail gun gas cartridges, as well as metal roofing and flashings.
We also work closely with local suppliers to ensure items such as paint buckets, gib, insulation, electrical waste, and pipes are disposed of responsibly. By managing our waste this way, we aim to reduce both greenhouse gas emissions and landfill impact, making our building process more sustainable for the community and the environment.
Durable, Energy-Efficient Homes Built to Last
At HB Homes & Commercial, our designs and building methods have been refined over decades, giving our experienced tradespeople the knowledge and skill to work efficiently, safely, and accurately. The result is a home or commercial space with greater integrity of design, form, and function, while reducing waste of materials and energy.
Building homes to last means lower maintenance and energy costs over their lifetime. We never compromise on quality, holding high standards for both the materials we use and the processes we follow. By focusing on efficiency, durability, and energy performance, we create spaces that are built not just for today, but to stand the test of time.
Our Community
Our connection to Hawke’s Bay runs deep. Every project we undertake is rooted in respect for the land we build on, the people we work with, and the wider community we’re part of. From planting natives to restore local waterways, to supporting initiatives like the Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter, mentoring apprentices, and fostering strong connections within our community, we strive to leave a positive mark wherever we can. For us, building isn’t just about structures, it’s about strengthening the communities we live in.
