Growing Something Bigger: Introducing the Irongate Collective

A few years ago, our team began an annual planting day as a practical way to give back to our local environment.

Each year, we stepped away from the factory for a day, pulled on our gumboots, and spent the day planting native trees and shrubs grown from locally sourced seeds by Hōhepa Nursery. It became something our team looked forward to, bringing us together while contributing to a greener, healthier Hawke’s Bay.

Our long-term hope was to bring this work closer to home by helping restore the Irongate Stream and protect the environment surrounding the place where we live, work, and thrive.

We knew that by joining forces with other businesses in our neighbourhood, we could create something bigger and more impactful.

From one business to a collective effort

We are proud to be a foundation member of the newly established Irongate Collective, alongside Lattey Construction and TUMU Group, with support from the Evergreen Foundation.

Facilitated by the Karamū River Catchment Collective, the initiative brings Irongate businesses together to invest their time, resources, and expertise into improving the local environment.

For us, it is a natural next step. What began as an annual HB Homes & Commercial planting day is now becoming part of something much bigger, with more hands, more resources, and the potential to create a lasting impact.

Restoring the Irongate Stream

The Collective’s first major project is the restoration of the Irongate Stream at Riverslea Road.

Together with fellow businesses and project partners, we helped plant more than 1,700 native plants along the stream. As they become established, these plants will help strengthen the stream banks, create habitat for native wildlife, and support the health of the wider Te Karamū catchment.

It was a rewarding day for everyone involved and a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when local businesses work together towards a shared goal.

For our team, it was especially meaningful to see a goal we had talked about for several years begin to take shape.

More than a single planting day

The Irongate Collective is not intended to be a one-off project. Its long-term goal is to build a strong, recognisable and self sustaining network of businesses committed to improving the Irongate environment.

Future opportunities could include further stream restoration, biodiversity and habitat projects, improved stormwater management, and environmental initiatives within local business sites.

Success will not simply be measured by how many plants go into the ground. It will be seen in healthier waterways, stronger habitats, and a growing group of local businesses taking responsibility for the place we share.

Building with the future in mind

At HB Homes & Commercial, we believe building well means looking beyond the walls themselves. The construction industry has an important role to play in reducing waste, using resources responsibly and protecting the environment for future generations.

Our purpose-built factory allows us to manage materials carefully and reduce unnecessary waste. Dedicated recycling stations throughout the factory help our team separate timber, metal, cardboard, plastics and other construction materials. In 2023, these practices helped us halve the amount of construction waste we sent to landfill.

We have also undertaken a detailed measurement process to better understand the carbon emissions generated across our operations, including those associated with our subcontractors and suppliers. This gives us a clearer picture of our environmental footprint and where we can continue to improve as we work towards our carbon neutral goal.

Becoming part of the Irongate Collective allows us to take this commitment beyond our factory and contribute to a coordinated, long-term programme of practical environmental action. We are proud of where our annual planting day began, but even more excited about where this collective effort could lead.

Because when businesses work together, small actions can grow into something much more meaningful.
